Chandigarh: Two burglars with covered faces and wearing gloves broke into four shops in Sector 40 and made off with cash and other items in the early hours of Tuesday. They arrived on a Honda Activa scooter and were caught on CCTV cameras installed in the market. Based on the statements of the shop owners, Sector 39 police registered a case against unknown persons and started an investigation.
Sweety Bansal, owner of a departmental store, said the burglars stole Rs 2 lakh in cash, body perfumes, body lotions, coins amounting to Rs 15, and other items from her shop before fleeing. An audio recording from the CCTV camera in her shop revealed that one of the thieves was dressed in a PPE kit, and they were conversing in Haryanvi.
Sahib Singh, who runs a chemist shop, said that the miscreants stole around Rs 20,000 in cash and damaged the CCTV cameras of the shops. Another complainant, Lalit Gujral, owner of a departmental store, said that the thieves broke into his shop and stole around Rs 25,000. Anil Kumar Gupta, the owner of another chemist shop, also reported that cash was stolen from his shop.
Sweety Bansal said her shop had been robbed before also, but no leads were found. Three days ago, locks were broken on three booths in Sector 40D booth market. It is said that the thieves continued their theft spree in Sector 40C and 40D markets from 2 am to 4 am.
